Microsoft Great Plains eCommerce - Stored Procedures Approach
Since Version 8.0 Microsoft Business Solutions Great Plains & Great Plains Standard are available on Microsoft SQL Server and MSDE (which is in fact MS SQL with database size limit of 2GB). As eCommerce designer you should be aware of several options and customization tools in your disposition, when you utilize Microsoft Great Plains 8.5 (June 2005), 8.0, 7.5, Great Plains Dynamics/eEnterprise 7.0, 6.0, 5.5 or 5.0 Great Plains Dynamics C/S+. When you have old versions (7.5 and prior) we assume that you are on MS SQL Server 2000/7.0, because if you are on Ctree or Pervasive SQL/Btrieve - you should use ODBC / RDO connection tools, such as MS Access and its queries or use MS SQL Server Linked Server technique with OPENROWSET statements. So, lets assume that you are on MS SQL Server. You have basically two options eConnect (you should pay for the reg key/license and this is SDK) and custom stored procedures. We’ll only consider custom stored procedures way here:
1. Stored Procs. The first question is - are we allowed to create stored proc in Great Plains DYNAMICS and companies databases. The answer is Yes - opposite to such products as Microsoft CRM (where you are banned to create any custom object in MS CRM database, and instead you create your own custom database and place all your procedures and views there) - you are encouraged to create your stored procedures and place them in both DYNAMICS and Company databases. You need to know the anatomy of Great Plains tables structure.
2. Tables Structure. If you launch Great Plains workstation and follow this way: Tools->Resource Descriptions->Tables - then you are in tables descriptor, sorting by tables Physical, Logical or Tables Group Technical names. This is all Great Plains Dexterity architecture realm and it is relatively complex and not “developer-friendly” - but if you create sample transactions in Great Plains - you can figure out where data should be populated.
3. Sales Order Processing. Or SOP module. This is usually the core of eCommerce development - transactions should go into SOP tables (with SOP prefix): SOP10100, SOP10200 and others. If you are selling to your existing customers, then customers are in Receivables Management module (AR) with AR prefixes: RM00101 - is Customer Master, RM00102 - customer address master, etc.
4. Sales Order/Invoice Allocation dilemma. Great Plains SOP module is working in concert with Inventory control, making allocation of inventoried items in IV. So, this is very challenging to replicate allocation logic. We recommend do not allocate in Orders and Invoices and do allocation by operator, who processes the internet orders batch.
5. Sales Order transfer dilemma. If you are using eConnect - this is kind of issue, so you have to appeal to GP internal architecture and do it with the stored procs approach.
Good luck with implementation, customization and integration and if you have issues or concerns - we are here to help! If you want us to do the job - give us a call 1-630-961-5918 or 1-866-528-0577! help@albaspectrum.com

Is Competition in Coaching a Good Thing?
Do you think that having competition for your coaching services is a good thing or a bad thing? I am surprised at the number of coaches who think that competition is a bad thing. This is an erroneous assumption.
Coaches often cite the presence of competitors in coaching being bad as they think that there will be less of the pie of potential clients for them. Believe it or not, competition is a good thing and here is why…
Competition is Good
Having the presence of competition for your coaching services is evidence that:
1. A market place exists - By seeing competitors (with successful practices) operating in your niche market, you know that there is a need for your type of service. People are already demonstrating their need and willingness to do something about it in the only time that matters in marketing - the present moment.
2. There are effective ways to reach your clients - You can learn from observing your competitors and the marketing methods they use to attract clients. This can shorten your learning curve tremendously so you have less trial and error.
3. Other coaches are being fed (and more) - If you see a number of other coaches in your niche market (again with successful practices) this shows you that they are able to contribute to their lifestyle through running their own coaching practice.
4. Your idea has potential - If other coaches are operating successful practices in your niche area - then why not you? Just put your own unique spin on the niche to differentiate yourself slightly from the competition and give people a reason to choose you.
The above points are simply a pragmatic way of setting up your own successful coaching practice.
Sure you could go after a fresh market that is untapped and has little or no competition. However, this route contains more uncertainty for you and often has a lower probability of success as it’s unproven. Of course, there are benefits of being the ‘trail blazer’ in your market but there are no certainties that your idea will succeed. It’s your choice.
Look for Competition
Here are a few points to consider when looking at your competition:
1. Do you have any? - Ideally, you want to find a niche market where there is some competition. Preferably your competition will come from other coaches so your market are already used to purchasing coaching services.
Your direct competition could also come from other trainers and consultants who satisfy a similar need in your marketplace.
2. Are they living well? - Have a look at your main competitors in your chosen niche. Are they living the type of lifestyle you aspire to?
Be on the look out for competitors that are not really marketing themselves very well but still have some clients. If this is the case, you have the chance of greater success with smarter marketing.
3. What will make you different? - Remember that potential clients need a reason to choose you over your competitors. Why would someone choose you specifically?
Find ways to differentiate your coaching practice from the competition so you give people a reason to choose you.
I do hope that this article is useful for you and that it has got you thinking about what it takes to set up a coaching practice that gives you the biggest chance of success.

Portable Structures
What do the Pentagon, an egg and the Brits have in common? It turns out quite a lot more than scrambled eggs for breakfast, in fact.
Two British engineers have developed Concrete Canvas, a rapidly deployable hardened shelter that requires only water and air for construction. Stuffing a building into a bag is no easy task, nor is erecting a concrete structure in less than an hour. But Peter Brewin and William Crawford have figured out the way, by observing the compressive ceramic structure of an egg. Concrete Canvas is a sack of cement-impregnated fabric that morphs into an emergency shelter with the addition of two simple ingredients: air and water.
The hut can be deployed by a single untrained person in less than an hour. The builder fills the sack with water, then inflates it. The hut hardens and is ready for use just 12 hours later. The objective is to facilitate quick assembly of structures that are much stronger and more durable than tents. And the applications are varied: for one thing the military is interested in the Canvas for food and equipment field storage. Its rapid deployment, strength and durability have captured the military’s attention. Additionally, the insulating characteristics of concrete make the Canvas suitable for setting first-aid, emergency shelters as well.
On the other side of the spectrum there is SYSTEMarchitects, an American firm from New York City, inventors of the Parish House, a computer-generated kit home. The Parish House is a new approach to an old idea first introduced in 1908 by Sears Roebuck. It is a three-bedroom, two-bath, 1,000 square feet bungalow whose structural system consists of 1,100 pieces of laser-cut plywood. There are no posts, no beams, no nails. The pieces of plywood are assembled and held together by a series of stainless steel fasteners.
Ease of assembly and time-saving are the two main characteristics: the boards can be cut locally and shipped to the construction site on two flatbed trucks. Cost in the USD $180’s.

Chinese Herbs & Aromatherapy for Infertility
There are many different causes of infertility in both men and in women. The primary source of infertility in men is a low sperm count. This can be due to constitutional and environmental factors. Chinese medicine can be used to increase circulation and body temperature, which may help improve sperm count. The same herbs that are used for this purpose may also improve a man’s sex drive and sexual performance. There are a number of factors involved in female infertility as well. A frequent cause of infertility is a blockage of the fallopian tube that prevents the sperm and the egg from meeting. Polycystic ovarian disease may also interfere with timely release of the eggs. Other gynecological health issues can also cause infertility such as endometriosis, salpingitis, pelvic inflammatory disease, and chlamydia. At other times, there can appear to be no structural or physical condition that is causing the infertility. While Chinese medicine and aromatherapy cannot determine the physical factors causing infertility (diagnostic testing is required for that), they can often address some of the sources of infertility once the cause is discovered.
The Chinese herbs, Leonurus (Yi Mu Cao) and Siegesbeckia (Xi Xian Cao), when used together, have been shown to open up blocked fallopian tubes in clinical research studies done in China. The majority of women responded to treatment within 10 days. The blockages in these cases were due to thickening of the lining of the tubes, excessive mucous secretion, partial blockage with scar tissue, inflammation, or infection. One remedy that may work well to treat this condition in combination with Chinese herbs is the enzyme, serrapeptase. Serrapeptase breaks down scar tissue and cystic tissue in the body while promoting circulation.
For women suffering from polycystic ovarian disease, a number of herbs and essential oils may be useful. Saw palmetto berries are known to block the production of the type of testosterone known to cause the disease. Chasteberries may help reduce the tendency towards formation of ovarian cysts and help balance out a woman’s hormones. Cypress essential oil used externally may also reduce the formation of cysts. Generally, women with this condition often need to have Damp Heat cleared from the Lower Burner, in Chinese medicine terms. They often also suffer from Kidney Yin Deficiency, and from Qi and Blood Stasis in the Lower Burner.
For women whose mucous secretions kill their husband’s sperm, their could be a condition of excess congestion and acidity in the body that can be balanced out through dietary and lifestyle changes along with the use of herbs and essential oils. Changing the body’s chemistry through holistic means may increase the likelihood of conception.
There are also a number of essential oils that can help to balance out a woman’s hormonal and reproductive system while promoting fertility. Geranium, clary-sage, and rose essential oil all nourish a woman’s system and help to bring it back into homeostasis.
Many times, there is no diagnosable reason or cause for infertility. In these cases, Chinese medicine can be highly effective in bringing back a woman’s mind, body, and spirit into harmonious balance, making her more receptive to conception.
Chinese herbs can also be used to maintain a healthy pregnancy once conception has occurred. Certain herbs such as xu duan(teasel root) and tu si zi(cuscuta), have traditionally been used to discourage miscarriages and promote a healthy pregnancy. A certain percentage of miscarriages are unpreventable (25%) because they are triggered by genetic abnormalities in the fetus, but in other cases, herbs may help increase the probability of carrying a pregnancy through a full nine month term.
As you can see, there are a wide variety of ways in which Chinese Medicine and aromatherapy can be used to improve a couple’s likelihood of conceiving a child, while preparing the woman emotionally and physically for conception and pregnancy.

Newspaper Carrier Under Age 18 Is Exempt from the Self-Employment Tax
The income of a newspaper carrier who is under age 18 is not subject to the self-employment tax (Sections 1402(c)(2)(A) and 3121(b)(14)(B)). This rule also applies to carriers of magazines who are under age 18.
The carrier must distribute the newspapers or magazines to the ultimate consumer for a fixed price. The compensation of the carrier must be based solely on the difference between what the price the carrier sells the newspapers or magazines to the consumer and their cost to the carrier.
The newspaper or magazine may guarantee a minimum amount of compensation to the carrier or credit the carrier with unsold and/or returned newspapers or magazines. The newspaper or magazine may not pay the carrier an hourly wage or a fixed salary. A written contract must provide that the newspaper or magazine will not treat the carrier as an employee for federal tax purposes.
If a teenager makes over $400 in adjusted net income from most other self-employment activities, the teenager would be subject to self-employment tax. The self-employment tax rate is 15.3 percent. The adjusted net income from self-employment is the net income from the business multiplied by 92.35 percent. Therefore, to have a self-employment tax liability, the net income from the activity must exceed $433.13 ($400 / 0.9235).
Once the self-employment income exceeds this amount, the self-employment tax rate applies to it until the amount of the self-employment income reaches the maximum amount for the 12.4 percent old age, survivors and disability insurance (OASDI) portion of the self-employment tax. This maximum amount is $94,200 for 2006. Because this amount represents the amount after multiplying the net self-employment income by 92.35 percent, the unadjusted amount of self-employment income subject to the OASDI portion of the self-employment tax is $102,003.24 ($94,200 / 0.9235).
The unadjusted self-employment income is the amount of the net income reported on Schedule C of Form 1040 (Schedule F for a farmer). No ceiling applies to the 2.9 percent portion of the self-employment tax for Medicare purposes.
The exemption from the self-employment tax for newspaper or magazine carriers who are under age 18 makes the choice of doing such work more attractive to such teenagers who need a part-time or summer job.

Fishing Charter “Need To Know”
There are several elements that go into creating the ideal charter fishing experience. The most important of these elements are not within the control of the charter service, captain, or the customers:
THE WEATHER: By weather, I am not just talking about rain, hail, sleet, snow, fog and other forms of precipitation. I’m talking about wind, and its effect on the water. Depending on the boat, the size of the waves will determine if and how far out you can go. This is actually one of the huge advantages of hiring a charter - an experienced captain will save the whole group a lot of grief by knowing when NOT to depart, or setting the proper expectations for the most probable outcome of the trip.
THE FISH: Another element that is not in the control of the participants is the condition and location of THE FISH. This is part of the charm and allure of fishing, but it can lead to disappointment, frustration and perceptions of incompetence. Again, an experienced captain can do much to set expectations based on weather, time of day, and permitted types of fish most likely to bite for the conditions, but ultimately you must realize it’s the fish that control this part of the equation, and have been known at times to be somewhat unreliable.
Now, on to variables we can control, and the more you know about them, the better decision you can make about your prospective captain and accommodations.
THE BOAT: This is more than a hull displacing enough water to keep you from swimming. The size, power and hull design of the boat combine to determine the limits of the trip. For example, a 32 ft Sport Fisher will carry 6 guests, will cruise at about 20 MPH, and often cannot proceed because the sea conditions seem to frequently exceed its capabilities by 1-2 feet. That means the happy party met at the dock for no good reason. Contrast this with a 27-ft Catamaran, which can also carry up to 6 guests, cruises at about 35 MPH, and slices comfortably and safely through much heavier seas than the standard “V” hull craft can handle. The huge bonus here is the speed - you spend much less time shuttling out to and back from the fishing spots, and much more time actually fishing. If you look at this whole proposition in terms of fishing time per charter dollar spent, you quickly realize that for twice the fishing time, the type of boat makes all the difference. One other advantage - on those days when it is just not possible to get offshore, the shallow draft of the catamaran gives you the opportunity to fish in the bay system. A word about safety - again the newer catamarans have all the advantages with unsinkable foam-filled hulls and twin outboard motor redundancy - much safer than the bigger inboard boats that try to convince people that size equals safety (which can sink in seconds), and much safer than the boats with inboard gasoline engines that have earned a bad safety reputation for blowing up.
THE CAPTAIN: Experience, intelligence, personality and certification are the keys to success. It’s difficult for you to assess a potential captain’s experience and intelligence, but you can get some clues. Have him talk to you about trips he has cancelled and why. Have him talk to you about the kinds of fishing locations he will be taking you to. Ask him how many years he has been doing this. With these simple questions, you can get a pretty good idea about experience and horse sense, and you will have talked with him enough to find out if his personality is the kind that will knit a group together for a good time. You will also ask about Coast Guard certification, which is required of any charter captain.
Now I’ll rate some of the other amenities:
AIR CONDITIONING: While we are all used to this convenience, in practical terms, it is pretty useless in the fishing charter context. First, you are on the water, and there will usually be a breeze. It’s a lot more tolerable than being on the land. Second, you can only air condition a closed space, and closed spaces generally make people sick in an ocean environment, no matter how cool they are. Also, most air conditioned areas of fishing boats don’t give you a view. You have to ask yourself why you wanted to go on this trip, and then decide if this is really important to you.
SHADE: This is important, even if you bring SPF 3000 sunscreen and wear a hat, you need a place to get out of direct sunlight.
TOILET (Head) - Unless this is a total frat party, this is usually a good idea.
Things you need to be aware of:
SIZE OF PARTY: Generally, more intimate groups have more fun than larger groups. Think about it: You stay more connected to a smaller crowd, and the captain has more of his personal time to share with fewer people.
CAPACITY: This is usually expressed in terms of “average sized people”. Weight is of primary importance for the comfort and safety of everyone, especially on the smaller boats. If the people in your party are exceptionally husky, you might want to drop the count by one. Consult with the captain if you have any concerns. NOTE: Often, you’ll see the boat rated by the manufacturer for 10 people, but the limit imposed by Coast Guard regulations on the same boat for charters may be 6.
WHAT’S INCLUDED? - Usually everything needed to fish is included - rods, reels, bait, ice chest (for fish), instruction (if you want/need it).
WHAT’S NOT INCLUDED? - food, drinks, fish cleaning (often offered as an extra option for “tips”).
REFUND POLICY: You need to know what this consists of, because of the uncontrollable variables listed above. If you are happy to keep the outing going when seas are too rough to go offshore, and you want to be able to convert to bay fishing, make sure that’s an option.
DEPOSIT: Most fishing charters will require a non-refundable deposit of some kind, because the company or captain has already committed resources to you that have to be taken off the market. This is a part of the deal. You need to get comfortable with it.
GRATUITIES: Your captain will provide you with the best time he knows how to deliver. If you think he did a good job, an appropriate tip is customary and is always appreciated.
I hope this outline of what goes into a successful fishing charter trip has been of some use and interest to you.
Kent Walters is loosely affiliated (as a customer) with Captain Anthony’s Fishing Charters in Freeport, TX, a fishing charter service that has been in operation in the Freeport/Galveston area for over 7 years. Captain Anthony Blewitt hails originally from England, and has a delightful “Crocodile Dundee” style of relaxed competence - Coast Guard certified and passionate about fishing. If you are in his area, there’s no need to look any further. If you are not in his area, look over his website, and look for someone playing the same general tune.

Noise Cancelling Headphones and Audio Accessories
Bose noise canceling headphones have comfortably slid into first place in the music accessory market. However this could be a down fall for the average consumer. Today people aren’t taking the time to research what the best product for them, instead bold new advertisements are making the decision for us.
In spite of this, dutifully, I’ve decided to go on the hunt for the best product in the latest craze to hit sound technology, (noise canceling headphones) and report back to the consumer. Fast on the rise of noise canceling headphones in the Sony MDR - NC11, with its distinctive ear buds, this earphone doesn’t just have the thumbs up in the quality of sound department but also the noise canceling feature. Small yet durable these little ear buds maybe misleading by their size but its noise canceling feature is defiantly a strong contender in this fast going market.
With the Sony’s unique design, the MDR-NC11 stretches one step beyond the rest, by using a high-quality performance low-tech technique; rubber plugs. The earphones work like earplugs in a two step system by ceiling off background noise and canceling noise as they’re in use.
The idea of Sony’s noise canceling earphones, on the other hand, is based on microphones that listen to the noise waves around you, along with built in circuitry built in, create sound that is the opposite of the what’s going on around you. The principle is explained at http://www.cancellingnoise.com as, when a wave of sound goes up around you, the wave of sound in the earphone goes down, thus giving you almost silence.
The Sony headphones listen to the noise going on around you, and using circuitry built into the device to create sound that is the opposite of what’s going on around you. So, as the wave of sound goes up around you, the wave of the sound in the headphone goes down, giving you virtual silence.
Sony’s new headphone line has really outdone the rest in creating a new approach to earphones themselves, by taking on a sleek and stream line design. Voted a 7.8 out of 10 by CNET editor Steve Guttenberg this new product will give Bose a run for their money.

Deliver Workshops and Promote Your Business
Pssst! Want to make money while promoting your business? Deliver
workshops or training events in your area of expertise, and
you’ll accomplish both. You’ll also establish yourself as an
expert in your field.
If you are afraid of public speaking, there’s a work around.
Engage the services of an experienced presenter or facilitator,
and you act as the assistant. With practice, you’ll overcome
your anxiety and eventually you’ll be comfortable going it alone.
Here’s how you get started:
1. Decide what you want to teach, and to whom. i.e. if you have
a bookkeeping business, you might decide to offer instruction in
basic bookkeeping to new entrepreneurs. When the entrepreneurs
decide it’s time to contract out their bookkeeping, whose name
will come to mind?
2. Decide whether your workshop is to be conference style or
skill development style. In conference- style events, the
trainer stands at the front of the room and speaks, using
audio-visual or other props where appropriate. Participants
learn what they can from the performance and from the
distributed handouts. In skill development workshops,
participants have the opportunity to practice and develop
specific skills throughout the course of the event. If selecting
the latter method, you will want to limit the number of
participants since each will need personal attention during the
hands-on learning activities.
3. Next, create a preliminary outline of your workshop and the
activities you will be incorporating. Decide: key points, skills
that your participants will acquire, and the instructional
method you will use to impart these skills.
4. Now, decide upon the ideal length of workshop, including
breaks. Determine your workshop schedule. Will it be delivered
over the course of a weekend? One evening a week for six weeks?
Other?
5. Determine the type of venue that you will need. Consider
seating space, building regulations, parking, restroom
facilities, and plugins and power supply adequate for operating
your equipment.
6. Decide how to market your workshop. Will you promote your
event through posters, advertisements in local media, letters to
existing customers, press releases, email, etc?
7. Create a budget. First, determine your expenses, including
facility rental, equipment rental, cost of providing coffee &
snacks, promotional budget, fee for helpers or assistants,
administrative expenses, handouts, samples, binders, etc. Then,
play with the figures until you have identified the number of
participants that you will need and the fee that you will charge
in order to break even and to generate a profit margin. Is your
fee reasonable and is it in line with what your participants are
likely to pay? If not, tinker until it is.
8. Decide the minimum number of participants that you must
attract to break even. Be prepared to cancel the workshop and
return participant fees if fewer than this number register.
Similarly, decide upon the maximum number of participants that
you can handle and offer a waiting list when that number is
reached.
9. Next, arrange for your facility. If suitable space is not
readily available, consider meeting rooms at universities and
colleges, community rooms in shopping malls, community halls and
agencies, convention centers, etc.
10. Promote your event.
11. Complete the planning for the workshop. Create a detailed
agenda for the workshop outlining the activities and learning
goals for every session. Arrange for equipment. Arrange for
beverages and snacks, if appropriate. Locate your assistants.
12. Prepare for last minute disasters. For example, if you’re
planning on showing a 45-minute video, what’ll you do if the VCR
breaks? You’ll fare better if you plan for the unexpected,
develop a flexible attitude and a sense of humor, and always
bring backup material.
Ready? Now break a leg!
