Integrated Marketing: Three Easy Steps To Do It Right
What’s a marketing professional to do? The world is filled with products, all vying for attention from your target audience. Research tells us that customers must see messages about seven times to really “see” your message. Businesses need to break through the clutter and stand out in a customer’s mind. Integrated marketing assures your message will reach your customer by using a variety of methods targeted to gain awareness, interest, demand and then to a saleIF your integrated marketing program is based on truly understanding your target customer.
1) Truly Understand Your Customer: To do integrated marketing most effectively, you must understand your customerwhat is their day-to-day life likeso that you can choose the most effective marketing vehicles and programs. Understand what your audience reads, sees and does each day. An urban commuter is often on public transportation and driving to workwhat do they see, read, notice. Soccer Moms are often in the car-what are they listening to, seeing, doing? By understanding your customer, you can build effective integrated marketing programs that reach them. If you don’t understand your customer, you won’t reach them no matter how many times you send your message out.
2) Identify the Right Combination of Communication Vehicles: By understanding your customer, you can then select the combination of communication vehicles to use to get to that “seven” impressions metric. Integrated marketing means using a variety of marketing mechanisms, all which work together to deliver your message. Recently, Pitney Bowes wanted to target CEOs and change their brand perception of the company. For their integrated marketing approach to work, they needed to create a marketing program that matched the target market’s interests and lifestyle. Realizing that CEOs are often traveling, they used airport billboards as a key strategy. Understanding that CEOs want exclusive information to help their businesses grow, they arranged for a new book by a well-known business writer to be sent to their target list and invited them to exclusive meetings with the business writer. It doesn’t matter how well your marketing activities are integrated if they don’t match your prospects lifestyle.
3) Consistent Messages: You wouldn’t put the exact same communications on a billboard, radio, print ad, and email. However, each message needs to support your overall brand, position and benefits. Each communication needs to work together to provide the same compelling message that highlights your differentiation and benefits.
Action Steps to Take Now:
1) Evaluate each customer segment you targetdo you understand what they do, read, see. What is their day-to-day life like?
2) Audit what you are currently doing–What is the best way to reach each target? Are there more effective, more cost-efficient ways to reach them?
3) Are your messages consistent in each communication? The specific wording and treatment may differ, but the bottom-line position of your company must come through to create the best synergy.

For Direct Marketers, Personality Is Everything
I’m sure you’ll find this interesting. While recently wrapping up a CEO search for a leading consumer catalog and web company, nearly all the candidates who made our client’s short list had the same personality. Interesting, yes! But not peculiar.
The finalist candidatesfour men and a womana talented mix of seasoned dm execs from across the country, were representing career backgrounds in a variety of product categories and company size.
In fact, after 12 years of assessment testing hundreds of men and womensenior-level direct marketing candidates for positions as CEO, Presidentfor leadership roles in Finance, Marketing, Merchandising, IT, Operations, I’ve noticed the same thing. Over 75% of these individuals have the same personality and temperament type. So for me, testing this most recent group came as no surprise.
Why Can’t We All Just Get Along?
The direct marketing executive personality type I’m referring toand the one you may not be aware ofis shared by only 12% to 15% of the American population, according to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). This is the standard-bearer of all personality assessments. In fact, it identifies sixteen distinctly different, universal personality types.
According to its publishers, Myers-Briggs is used by roughly nine out of 10 Fortune 100 companies and is administered to more than 2.5 million employees a year. The MBTI was developed 60 years ago based on the theories of psychoanalyst Carl Jung. It endures, because it does a great job of improving team relations by pointing out differences between how personality “types” perceive and process information.
The Right Fit
A Harvard University study found that for every dismissal based on failure to perform, there are two dismissals due to personality and communication problems. With the high costs of employee turnover, it’s no surprise more and more direct marketing organizations are turning to personality and behavioral assessments to help evaluate job candidates, build teams and resolve workplace conflicts.
Think about it. You’re already testing offers, testing copy, testing merchandise, and testing catalogs. So why not your people?
If your business is not doing so, you ought to consider using testing (and there are numerous pre-hire assessment options to choose from) to fine-tune your hiring process and bring in top talent. It may help you get a handle on which candidates are most likely to succeedevaluating candidates before they are hired. And give you some kind of idea of what makes them tick.
This raises the question: Are certain people genetically bred to go into direct marketing? Or does the very nature of the business effect personality and temperament? Take your pick. In my judgment, it’s a bit of both. “We want to learn more about candidates as individuals,” says Andy Katz, President & CEO of pet supplies direct marketer, PetEdge. “Once a candidate is hired, this same information helps us understand and maximize their talents specific to the role they have,” Katz adds. “And we continue to work on developing employees’ self-awareness throughout their careers to help create an environment that ensures success.”
You Can’t Study For It
In taking a personality assessment, experts advise candidates to answer the questions truthfully, not the way they think the company wants them to respond. There is often a validity factor built in where many questions are asked solely to determine whether the subject is answering truthfully and consistently.
Even if the candidate does fool the test, he or she will only wind up in a job or assignment that doesn’t fit or will make youand those around youmiserable. According to Bonnie Bass, a vice president of a professional dynametric programs testing organization, “When people feel the need to act unnaturally, they waste energy, experience stress and become unhappy and less productive. People are at their best when they’re doing work that draws on their natural strengths and allows them to be themselves.”
Free Offer: What’s Your Direct Marketing Personality?
I will give a free, confidential personality and assessment test to the first 10 senior-level direct marketing executives who respond by email. Discover your four-letter Myers-Briggs type. Healthy Trans Fats vs. Unhealthy Trans Fats Explained
I’m going to talk about something today that most of you have probably never heard…that there is a distinction between good trans fats and bad trans fats. There is some evidence that the good trans can help you with fat loss, muscle building, and even cancer prevention, while the bad trans fats have been shown to cause heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and the general blubbering of your body.
I’m sure most of you have heard all of the ruckus in the news over the last few years about just how bad man-made trans fats are for your health. If you’ve been a reader of my newsletter and my “Truth about Six Pack Abs” e-book program, then you definitely know my opinion that these substances are some of the most evil food additives of all and are found in the vast majority of all processed foods and fast foods on the market today. In my opinion, man-made trans fats are right up there with smoking in terms of their degree of danger to your health. After all, they are one of THE MAIN factors for the explosion of heart disease since approximately the 1950’s.
As you may have heard recently, the FDA has mandated that food manufacturers include the grams of trans fat on all nutrition labels starting back at the beginning of this year. This means that as inventory is replaced in the grocery stores, you should start to see grams of trans listed on all packages from now on, providing you with an easier way to avoid them.
With all of the talk about trans fats in the news these days, I wanted to clarify some things, particularly regarding bad trans fats vs. good trans fats. If you’ve never heard of good trans fats before, let me explain in a bit.
The Bad Trans Fats
First, the bad trans fats I’m referring to are the man-made kind. These are represented by any artificially hydrogenated oils. The main culprits are margarine, shortening, and partially hydrogenated oils that are in most processed foods, junk foods, and deep fried foods. These hydrogenated oils are highly processed using harsh chemical solvents like hexane (a component of gasoline), high heat, pressure, have a metal catalyst added, and are then deodorized and bleached. A small % of the solvent is allowed to remain in the finished oil. This has now become more of an industrial oil rather than a food oil, but somehow the FDA still allows the food manufacturers to put this crap in our food at huge quantities, even with the well documented health dangers.
These hydrogenated oils cause inflammation inside of your body, which signals the deposition of cholesterol as a healing agent on artery walls. Hence, hydrogenated oil = inflammation = clogged arteries. You can see why heart disease has exploded since this crap has been loaded into our food supply over the last 5 to 6 decades. As time goes on, and science continues to unveil how deadly these oils really are, I feel that eventually they will be illegal and banned from use. The labeling laws were just the first step. In fact, certain countries around the world have already banned the use of hydrogenated oils in food manufacturing or at least set dates to phase them out for good.
However, keep in mind that as companies are starting to phase out the use of hydrogenated oils in processed foods, they are replacing them, in most instances, with highly refined polyunsaturated oils. These are still heavily processed oils using high heat, solvents, deodorizers, and bleaching agents. Even refined oils are known to produce inflammation in your body…a far cry from natural sources of healthy fats. Once again, for the best results, your best bet is avoiding highly processed foods altogether and choose whole, natural, minimally processed foods. Your body will thank you!
The Good Trans Fats
Ok, after having trash talked the man-made trans fats, let me clearly state that there IS such a thing as healthy natural trans fats. Natural trans fats are created in the stomachs of ruminant animals like cattle, sheep, goats, etc. and make their way into the fat stores of the animals. Therefore, the milk fat and the fat within the meat of these animals can provide natural healthy trans fats. Natural trans fats in your diet have been thought to have some potential benefit to aid in both muscle building and fat loss efforts. However, keep in mind that the quantity of healthy trans fats in the meat and dairy of ruminant animals is greatly reduced by mass-production methods of farming and their grain and soy heavy diets. Meat and dairy from grass-fed, free-range animals always have much higher quantities of these beneficial fats.
One such natural trans fat that you may have heard of is called conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and has been marketed by many weight loss companies. Keep in mind that these man-made CLA pills you see in the stores may not be the best way to get CLA in your diet. They are artificially made from plant oils, instead of the natural process that happens in ruminant animals. Once again, man-made just doesn’t compare to the benefits of natural sources.
Now that all of your labels should be listing grams of trans fat, keep in mind that if a quantity of trans fat is listed on a meat or dairy product, it is most likely the natural good trans fats that we’ve discussed here. Otherwise, if the quantity of trans is listed on any processed foods, it is most likely the dangerous unhealthy crap from artificially hydrogenated oils, so stay away!
I hope you’ve enjoyed this interesting look at good trans fat vs. bad trans fat and use the info to arm yourself with more healthful food choices for a better body.
The Pros and Cons of Ceiling Speakers
Office buildings, airports and restaurants were the first homes of ceiling speakers. They can be easily recognized by the dense grilles that pour decibels right into your head.
But why would someone want ceiling or in wall speakers, instead of a pair of normal, efficient and highly affordable speaker cabinets. There could be a few reasons:
* Saving some space in the room;
* Maintaining the aesthetics of the room;
* Hiding the wires;
* Getting rid of the holes in the walls.
In the past, there weren’t many fans of wall or ceiling-mounted speakers. While there are still people that think plenum-mount technology is just a whim, on the other side it is this technology in particular that gains more and more advocates. This is probably due to a change in life styles. People want the environment adapted to their needs, not the other way around.
There’s one sure thing with in-wall and ceiling speakers: they are not for those who are into high-end audio. You could hardly find an audiophile willing to trade the deep bass that he or she loves so much for a bit of extra shelf space.
But even if not an audiophile, you’ll need to pay attention to the following parameters:
* Frequency response - gives you the range of the audible spectrum that the speakers can reproduce; the human ear can hear 20 Hz to 20 MHz, thus the more a speaker approaches this interval, the better.
* Power handling - specifies the ranges of power the speakers can safely receive from the amplifier (e.g. 20-100 watts);
* Efficiency - also called sensitivity, this rating indicates how effectively the speaker uses the power sent to it by the amplifier.
A key aspect in having in-wall or in-ceiling speakers is how you capture the back wave. You can’t always know what happens behind that wall, how big the hole really is, or if it’s sealed. The answer is to use sealed speakers, no matter their location. Otherwise you’ll have a lot of rear acoustic energy wasted into the back-wall and a distorted, uneven sound.
Mounting the speakers
Usually it is a lot easier to mount ceiling speakers than in-wall speakers, at least where there is a fake ceiling. Mounting in-wall speakers is more of an architectural problem. That’s probably why these are also called “architectural speakers”. People don’t like to have small rooms, thin walls, and wires bursting from one room to another.
The easiest alternative is to project the audio system before even having the walls built up. The advantage is freedom to plan things (speakers among others) exactly how you want them. Figuring out the wires is the part you should do before building the walls. Some planning is needed ahead: talking to an electrician, finding out how much wire you need, seeing what kind of wire you can actually use (UL-rated wire is approved for use in walls in all 50 states). Also, seeing the layout of your lighting system, and how it would interfere with that of the speakers.
Inserting the speakers can be done on the run, as the wall is being raised. Some people successfully use the drywall as a speaker’s enclosure. The key is to have the speakers in the right place from the start. This would save you time, money and nerves.
Installing the speakers in an existing wall or ceiling is a bit more difficult and pricey. But it can be done. At first, find out what’s behind the walls you want the speakers mounted in and see if you can drill. You need to make some holes into the desired spots, and build the speaker-enclosures.
Ceiling speakers have a drawback: the location. we’re not used to having the sound come down at us from the ceiling, but from our side. The sensation of the sound-waves reaching the head and then the ears, is a bit strange. Some ceiling speakers are flexible within a given degree, so they can be pointed towards the listener. They are round-shaped in order to match the bulbs and lamps that also found their site on the ceiling.
Niles, SpeakerCraft, and others use directional tweeters and woofers that can be separately adjusted to compensate for imaging problems arising from the positioning drawbacks.
Most in wall speakers have paintable grilles, so you can perfectly black them out.
Above all, my biggest dilemma is what to do if my trendy, camouflage speaker, be it in-wall or in-ceiling, breaks down? Most users say I don’t need to worry as they can be taken out, repaired or even replaced. There’s also absolutely no need to worry if I want to add some speakers to my system, they say. One solution would be to think ahead and stuff the wall with more wire for later add-ons. Still, I find this unnecessary hassle. But for the sake of interior design logic, it may be worth it.

Network Your Way to Success- 12 Tips to Jumpstart Your Business
Lots of people network but few reap the rewards of zeroing in on their potential when it comes to networking. Here are some tips to help fill the gap between where you are now and where you can be.
1- Be Generous- Give without expectations and you will be surprised at how it returns to you. It may not come from the same source but a new client, referral, or opportunity will show up because of your efforts.
2- Be Consistent- As in marketing, the more consistent your networking efforts the more productive they become. Jay Conrad Levinson of Guerilla Marketing stated, “I hate to admit this, but mediocre marketing with commitment works better than brilliant marketing without commitment.”
3- Know & Clarify WIIFT- When creating your introduction clarify who your target market is and “what’s in it for them”. Sell benefits. Verizon sells wireless phone service but sells it when you believe they never stop working to fill your phone service needs. “Can you hear me now?”
4- Get Involved- Getting involved puts you in a consistent position of visibility.
5- Be a Powerful Resource & Advocate for Others- Expand your network and be an advocate for others. Use your networking resources to hook up people you know with others. What goes around comes around.
6- Learn the Needs of Others then Help Fill Those Needs- Can your business fill their needs? Who do you know who can? Either way you have a win/win situation.
7- Build the Know- Like- Trust Factor- Building relationships is more important than collecting lots of leads. Think quality vs. quantity. Connect deeper vs. on the surface.
8- It’s More Important to Receive Business Cards than Hand Them Out- This puts you in a position to be able to follow up.
9- Consistently Follow- Up- It’s not enough to have a network. Follow up and continue developing your relationships and network. Have a good reason to follow up or ask “how can I help you?”
10- Develop Advocates- Build relationships with Centers of Influence who connect with your ideal client or customer. Offer incentives for referrals or provide great benefits.
11- Be Curious- The 6 Degrees of Separation Theory states that we are only 6 people away from finding out anything we need to know. Be curious and you will be surprised at what people, resources, and information are at your finger tips.
12- Develop You- You can grow your business as big as you can grow yourself. Start there!
To shift into action choose one tip to focus on for a week and see what new results come your way. Then try on another and so on. Before you know it your networking efforts will be paving your way to success. Starting Now!

A Simple Procedure In Leaflet Designing
Leaflet is a way of showing your ideas as well as emotions in terms of words, pictures and then graphics. The way you present your ideas in the leaflet will determine or will influence the perception of your readers in terms of the messages conveyed in your leaflet. The information in your leaflets will enable your customers to decide whether your information has relevance to them or is just a waste of their time.
The design of the leaflet must be created in such a way wherein the whole point you want to discuss in the leaflet are conveyed in a direct and concise manner that is effective enough in encouraging comments as well as action from the readers. In terms of the text to be used it must possess the following characteristics: persuasiveness, must be interesting, noteworthy and helpful. Create your text in such a way that it will leave a mark in the minds of its readers. And then be sure to use only short paragraphs and then make sure you mark them with headings. For sequential ideas make use of bullets since it is must easier to read. Also, for those information which you may want to give emphasis on you may highlight or make use of a different font and then bold the texts.
The picture design is also important in the leaflet since it will help you to convey your message more effectively. The pictures to be use for the leaflets will depend on the subject or the theme of your leaflet. The layout process entails for careful planning and this would require team work since you will be deciding on the type of text and pictures to be used for your leaflets. Layouting would require for initial sketches that would show where you want your text to be placed, where the headings will be placed, where the pictures will go, what colors are best for texts and for the background.
After the layout process will then commence the printing. The design would now be uploaded in the computer. The typing and the formatting of texts will need a word processing program such as MS Word. But for those expert computer users they may prefer to use QuarkXpress or Adobe Photoshop especially for the designing process. But for those who doesn’t have computers and don’t know how to use one there are professional printers out there where you may take your leaflet project. And if ever you find it a tedious task to visit every local print shop in your place you can always surf on the net for professional printers that offer affordable prices for your leaflet project. It is much easier and convenient searching online.
Things to remember to instruct your printers- the usual things that happen especially when you take your leaflet project to a printer is that they commonly cut the leaflet to size and so you must never forget to instruct them to leave a bleed margin. The bleed margin is usually a space of 2mm around the edge of the design which is commonly lost during the cutting process. Another thing, images should be saved as 300 dpi and stored in as JPG or TIF files. But if ever the quality of the image is too low then there is the possibility of its corners to go jagged. The paper to be use should also be given great consideration since papers that are too thin tend to blot when colors are applied.

Internet Marketing is Growing like Weeds
The Internet is growing so fast. Are you growing with it. Are you trying to sell something on the Internet? The numbers are growing daily. It is getting harder and harder just to market to the whole net. It has become so large that now you really need to concentrate in your niche area. Actually you probably were just wasting your time, effort and money if you were just shooting out into the crowd. If you listen or have heard anyone in the know about advertising they speak about a targeted group or market.
We want the 15 to 25 or the 18 to 35. Or they want the middle aged white male. These are targeted groups. But there is another area that smart marketers use. It is call a targeted niche. I niche is a group that are interested in a specific area or field or even product. So besides thinking about your targeted group you should also consider what your niche group is.
As an example, if you are selling fishing rods, it could go to almost any targeted group, BUT you don’t really want to try and sell to people who hate fishing. So your niche groups would be people who like hunting, camping, and of course fishing. You see where I am going. You want to be making your offers to people who would at least have some interest in what you have. Believe it or not some do not consider this when they plan their advertising campaigns.
Now if you have all kinds of money and time and you just want to shoot blindly out into the Internet I am sure you will still make some sales. Just like if you walk around long enough on a golf course you will get hit with lighting. I think you see what I mean. Do alittle planning and you will find your sales, your growth, your whole operation will
do far much more if you concentrate on your niche markets.
As your products and knowledge grows so will you niches. Because as you build you business and expand, you will be able to expand your niches. Then you will have a great and great group to work with.
Now I have learned this and many many other fanstatic Internet Marketing technics from a Marketer. That started with almost nothing and turned it into a multimillion dollar empire. This information was free an changed my internet marketing for life.
