My husband is always on the look out for luxury vacation destinations off the beaten track. We love the luxury of secluded beaches and leisurely meals in open-air restaurants facing the beach. This year, for our holiday, we went to Grenada, the spice isle of the Caribbean. To me, Grenada is the land of sweet smelling spice plantations, rum estates, and nature reserves with lakes and glorious waterfalls. To him, I can assure you, Grenada is the island for sailing, hiking, and a challenging round of golf with friends. I don’t blame you if you think we must have gone on tours to different islands but it is true that Grenada has all this and more.

We stayed at La Source on Pink Gin Beach in the southwestern part of the island. After a couple of days on the beautiful beach by the luxury resort, and body treatments and massages at the Oasis Spa, we were ready for some adventure sports. Wandering around St. George, a pretty colonial town, we came across several tour operators offering everything from river tubing on the Balthazar river to scenic boat tours around the island and day trips to Petite Martinique and Carriacou, Grenada’s sister islands.

We signed up for a tour of the waterfalls. Anandale falls was easy to reach and it was close to St. George. Of the three Concorde falls, hiking to the two falls of Au Coin and Fountainbleu took 2 hours. A swim in the clear waters of the pool under the Concorde falls was a luxury to rejuvenate our tired limbs after the energetic hike.

The day before our departure, I opted for a leisurely boat trip around the island while my husband went off to play a round of gold at the luxury resort’s on-site 9-hole golf course. Grenada, we promise to come back for a longer vacation next time.
