Mother Nature has provided us with a very sound and amazing system in our body. We should thank our mother nature by taking care of and respecting system in our body. Our body can take care of a lot of disorder by itself. Food poisoning is one such disorder which should clear up in a few days by itself. But if we observer some safety rules to foods and kitchen then food poisoning can be avoided completely.

Symptoms of food poisoning may include vomiting, diarrhea, fever and cramping. These symptoms usually occur after 3 hours or even after up to 36 hours of eating tainted food. These symptoms may last up to several days. There are several things which we can do to minimize the affects of food poisoning or completely eliminate it. If we take a tablespoon of lemon juice or apple cider vinegar in a cup of hot water before a meal it can help prevent acidic indigestion. Also rubbing a mixture of a few drops of garlic oil to half a cup of soy oil on our stomach after taking meal could also be helpful. Herbal tea would be a good strategy to avoid it. This herbal tea could be of mint, raspberry, chamomile, blackberry or even a cup of ginger tea could be very helpful during food poisoning because it promotes good digestion. Some doctors suggest that eating bread could help soak some of the food poisons. A mixture of cumin, salt, asafetida and other herbs are very popular drink in India which is taken in parties to avoid food poisoning, popularly called “Jaljeera”- it makes a good drink due to its nice taste and would be very helpful in sour burps. One general advice would be to lie down and drink a lot of bland fluids like water, fruit juice or light tea. Bananas, rice, cooked apples and dry toast could be good edibles till the food poisoning lasts. But if the symptoms persist for more than a couple of days we must consult a doctor.

But how to avoid food poisoning? Do not over eat specially in the parties or big occasions. Stop little less before you body says no more. Completely avoid foods that are their past expiration date. Avoid raw or undercooked eggs found in mayonnaise, sauces, mousse and unbaked cake batters. In general discard food that smells bad or have unusual color because those are signs of bacteria in it. We should regularly wash our dishcloth and sponges in our kitchen with hot water and soap after every use. We should keep raw foods away from all other cooked foods and also separate dairy produces in order to prevent cross-contamination. We should be very careful when handling meat, fish, shellfish and especially poultry.
